Question about XQuartz and future AFNI software updates

Dear AFNI users and developers,

I use AFNI on classroom mac computers for one of the neuroimaging courses I teach. The software support folks at my institution asked about whether there is an a alternative to XQuartz or a plan for AFNI software updates in 2027, given that it appears that development for XQuartz has stopped and that XQuartz may not run with the fall 2027 major macOS release.

Hi, Carissa-

This is something we will monitor (no pun intended).

I believe that Rosetta is planning to fade away in 2027, but I believe XQuartz runs on Silicon natively since v2.8.0. Do you have pointers to more details about that?

That's great to know it's something you're monitoring.

I'll check in with our IT support staff to see whether they have pointers to more details about that. They did suggest that it would likely still run as you mentioned as well.
