3dMVM - interactions with covariates

Hi Gang,

Thanks for clearing out my questions with co-variates for 3dMVM. I have a couple more questions. I have also copied by script below for reference.

  1. Do the outputs of load main effect, chrom main effect and interaction between load and chrom after the effect of AgeD has been estimated or is this without the effect of AgeD? It doesn’t indicate so when I pull up each of these F stat images as the overlay.

  2. Is the only way I can look at the effect of the covariate AgeD on the within -subject factors of load and chrom through looking at specific contrasts, for e.g…
    -gltLabel 1 AgeD_l_vs_m -gltCode 1 ‘load : 1l -1m AgeD :’ for the effect of age on the contrast between the l load and m load?

  3. Is it possible to look at the effect of AgeD on main effects and interactions as a whole, instead of contrasts?

Please let me know if anything is unclear.

  1. Do the outputs of load main effect, chrom main effect and interaction between load and chrom
    after the effect of AgeD has been estimated or is this without the effect of AgeD? It doesn’t indicate
    so when I pull up each of these F stat images as the overlay.

The two main effects and the interaction are estimated when the AgeD is controlled at the center value (overall average) in this case. For example, the main effect of ‘chrom’ shows the difference between ‘o’ and ‘d’ assuming all the subjects are at the average age of those subjects.

  1. Is the only way I can look at the effect of the covariate AgeD on the within -subject factors of load
    and chrom through looking at specific contrasts, for e.g…

The main effect shows of load indicates the differences across those 3 levels (l, m, and h) when the age is held at the center value. Similarly, the contrast of m vs. h shows the difference between m and h when the age is controlled at the center. Does this answer your question?

Let’s say Model A had AgeD as a covariate and Model B did not.To be clear, both models still have load and chrom as within subject factors.
Here, would you say that a cluster of activation that showed up as a load main effect for Model B but not Model A was one where activation varied as a function of AgeD. Therefore, when controlled for AgeD in Model A, this cluster of activation disappeared?

Let’s say Model A had AgeD as a covariate and Model B did not.To be clear, both models still
have load and chrom as within subject factors. Here, would you say that a cluster of activation
that showed up as a load main effect for Model B but not Model A was one where activation
varied as a function of AgeD. Therefore, when controlled for AgeD in Model A, this cluster of
activation disappeared?

How are the ages distributed among the subjects? At the cluster where you see main effect of ‘load’ in Model A but not Model B, do you see some extent of age effect for either level of ‘load’? Also, is there any interaction between ‘age’ and 'load" at the cluster?

This was a hypothetical question. I ran the two models after I wrote this and actually checked the effects in the bucket across the two. Apparently, the results are identical i.e. no differences in the clusters between Models A and B. Is this expected?

Thanks for clarifications. That worked. I see that running this model gives me main effect of Load, chrom, AgeD and interactions between the three. This looks like what I want to move forward. I want to clarify further on the interpretation of the clusters of activation for effects that show an interactions with AgeD versus no interactions with AgeD.
